Catch Basin Cleaning for Commercial Properties
Catch basins are the first line of defense on a commercial site, and they fill from the bottom up. Once sediment reaches the lower pipe, the basin stops holding solids back and starts passing them downstream.
Washington's maintenance standard is a useful benchmark across the region. A basin is due for cleaning when sediment fills more than 60 percent of the depth from the sump floor to the invert of the lowest pipe, or sits within six inches of that invert.

Vacuum extraction clears sand, grit, gravel and leaf pack from the full depth of the sump, not just the visible top layer.

Debris mats across the grate cause surface ponding long before the pipe blocks. We clear the grate, frame and inlet throat on every visit.

Storm Drain and Stormwater Line Cleaning
Catch basins are only the entry point. The lines running between them carry the same sediment load plus root intrusion, and a blocked run floods a parking lot even when every grate is clear.
High-pressure jetting cuts through the blockage while the vacuum unit recovers everything it loosens. Nothing is pushed further down the system to settle somewhere else.
Underground Piping and Stormwater Lines
Rotating jet heads scour pipe walls back to full diameter, clearing scale, sediment shelves and fine root hair.
Root Intrusion at Pipe Joints
Roots enter at the joints and trap everything that passes. Jetting cuts them back and the vacuum removes the material, so the line does not reblock within weeks.

Industrial sites that discharge stormwater operate under Ecology's Industrial Stormwater General Permit, an NPDES permit requiring stormwater controls, inspections and recordkeeping. State maintenance standards call for annual catch basin inspection and cleaning at the sediment thresholds above.
Oregon
Facilities with industrial activity exposed to rainfall need DEQ's 1200-Z permit, which requires a stormwater pollution control plan, monthly site inspections and discharge monitoring. Portland adds source control expectations in the Columbia Slough and Portland Harbor areas.
British Columbia
Vancouver's Sewer and Watercourse By-law prohibits discharging contaminated water to a storm sewer, including water carrying more than 75 milligrams per litre of suspended solids. Hydrovac spoil is never returned to the system.

How often should commercial catch basins be cleaned?
Most Pacific Northwest commercial sites run on an annual or semi-annual cycle. Properties with heavy tree cover, high traffic or industrial activity usually need quarterly service to stay ahead of the sediment thresholds.
How do I know when a catch basin is due for cleaning?
Lift the grate and look at the sump. It is due when sediment fills more than 60 percent of the depth between the sump floor and the lowest pipe, or comes within six inches of that pipe.
What is the difference between hydrovac and standard drain rodding?
Rodding punches a hole through a blockage and leaves the material in the line. Hydrovac cuts the blockage apart with high-pressure water and vacuums the debris out, so the pipe is restored to full diameter.
Where does the recovered waste go?
Spoil and wastewater are captured in the vacuum tank and transported to an authorized disposal facility. Nothing is discharged to the storm system or left on site.
Will cleaning damage older pipes or catch basins?
No. Pressure is set to suit the pipe material and the condition of the structure, and our crews inspect before jetting so fragile sections are handled accordingly.
Can the work happen outside business hours?
Yes. Most drain and catch basin work is scheduled for evenings, overnight or weekends so parking areas, loading docks and drive-throughs stay open during trading hours.
